<\/p>\n
“My love”, I said<\/p>\n
“A poem for you.”<\/p>\n
She looked at it<\/p>\n
then continued anew<\/p>\n
the filing of her nails.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This I will always<\/p>\n
love of you<\/p>\n
and why I will<\/p>\n
set it in human stone,<\/p>\n
why I will forever kiss<\/p>\n
the failing that you drag,<\/p>\n
love you straight through<\/p>\n
the holes in my socks.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
It is that you refuse<\/p>\n
to glance sideward.<\/p>\n
Beauty, your prophetic chin<\/p>\n
pointed ahead into that heaven<\/p>\n
where you are above it all.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My poetry but the sound<\/p>\n
of coins falling into tin cups,<\/p>\n
useful in this world<\/p>\n
but not where you tread<\/p>\n
far beyond this beggar’s roar<\/p>\n
the capabilities of my love,<\/p>\n
up high, into a next made without hope<\/p>\n
hope, this world, this poet cannot evade<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
always looking sideways, never just to be<\/p>\n
