Forty years kneading dough<\/p>\n
After the war,<\/p>\n
Told me he had found only<\/p>\n
Two ways of making bread;<\/p>\n
The slow bake of philosophy<\/p>\n
the luxury of the rich or high minded,<\/p>\n
for the rest, the quick snatch of wonder<\/p>\n
between the long steady strokes of the whip.<\/p>\n
Then sternly, his strong hand on my shoulder<\/p>\n
He said,<\/p>\n
“Son, always be on the other end of the whip,<\/p>\n
for there they eat not bread but cake.<\/p>\n
Living is an affair for those who turn on the ovens.<\/p>\n
