{"id":481,"date":"2012-01-04T22:12:51","date_gmt":"2012-01-05T03:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ddeubel.me\/poetry\/?p=481"},"modified":"2012-01-04T22:12:57","modified_gmt":"2012-01-05T03:12:57","slug":"seeing-josef-skvorecky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ddeubel.me\/poetry\/seeing-josef-skvorecky\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeing Josef Skvorecky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Writer&#8217;s Place<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The swan sings on the lake of the mind&#8221;<br \/>\n   &#8211; the ,  Silver Swan, Kenneth Rexroth<\/p>\n<p>Seeing a man<br \/>\nin the distance<br \/>\nI knew<br \/>\nit must be you, only you<br \/>\nthat Whitmanesque<br \/>\neveryman<br \/>\nso rarely seen on these<br \/>\nsenseless streets.<\/p>\n<p>You walked with a rhythm,<br \/>\na side to side waddle of<br \/>\na man smoothed &#8211; no soothed<br \/>\nby years of mindful contemplation,<br \/>\nwaves rubbing, rolling, refinding rock.<\/p>\n<p>You, with the blue jeans &#8211;<br \/>\nthe scream of the common<br \/>\nand safari hat<br \/>\ncocked on one side<br \/>\nso you the hunter<br \/>\nmelding meaning and moments<br \/>\ncould  hear the hammering<br \/>\nhearts of your everyday prey<br \/>\nso often seen<br \/>\non these sacredless streets.<\/p>\n<p>So many buzzed around you<br \/>\nin busyness<br \/>\nlost in thoughts of<br \/>\nhot dogs, hard ons, haftos<br \/>\nunaware of you<br \/>\nsomeone who has achieved<br \/>\nthe unwritten writer&#8217;s aim &#8211;<br \/>\nabsorption into the word<br \/>\nheard but healthily unheralded.<\/p>\n<p>What if<br \/>\nyou were Hulk Hogan<br \/>\nI thought?<br \/>\nHow the street would hum for days<br \/>\nafter your handsomeness<br \/>\nhad passed, this way (away?)<br \/>\nYet, I see you<br \/>\nJosef<br \/>\ncaught in that<br \/>\ncircuitous virtuouso<br \/>\nthat only we know about<br \/>\nyet, unable to shout &#8211;<br \/>\nwe walk the streets<br \/>\nwith our masks metted on.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing you<br \/>\nwalking so sure<br \/>\namong us,<br \/>\nwho suffer surely<br \/>\nyet so sillily (and willingly),<br \/>\nI saw you<br \/>\nmeasuring our merriment<br \/>\nin song<br \/>\nmeters of mediocrity<br \/>\npulling you along<br \/>\ninto our midst<br \/>\nso obscurely (and surely).<\/p>\n<p>I thought to ask you<br \/>\nabout this or that,<br \/>\nlet your smooth finish<br \/>\nshine upon me &#8211;<br \/>\nbut thought better<br \/>\nas I watched you<br \/>\nassuredly deposit a letter<br \/>\ninto the mouth of a mailbox. <\/p>\n<p>You have other things in mind.<\/p>\n<p>A cold pivo perhaps<br \/>\n(or an old love lapsed)?<br \/>\nTo run home and<br \/>\nlike a person who<br \/>\nhaving seen a U.F.O.<br \/>\ntries to live with it<br \/>\nthe knowledge of another world<br \/>\nmaybe<br \/>\nmore important than our own<br \/>\nwhile the bread and circuses<br \/>\nkeep things going around<br \/>\nkeep lifting up the frowns<br \/>\nas some as yet unknown gladiator<br \/>\neats crumbling, unleavened bread<br \/>\nand awaits his death<br \/>\nin the dark caverns<br \/>\nbelow the merry meant.<\/p>\n<p>(P.S.)
