They’re always askin’ me<\/p>\n
“When’s your book coming out?”<\/p>\n
and I tell them<\/p>\n
“Next month. I’m working on it.<\/p>\n
Next year. You just wait ….”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The postman, the neighbor, my bartender<\/p>\n
the neighbor’s kid, the barber, my alter ego.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I should just come clean<\/p>\n
say what I mean – “Never.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Books are overrated.<\/p>\n
The minute you finish one<\/p>\n
the thing is dead, rotting<\/p>\n
and then what?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
So the notebooks and scratchins<\/p>\n
pile up in the back closet<\/p>\n
and the word stays alive in me<\/p>\n
as I, like any good poet<\/p>\n
