Growing up
\nI always thought my dad
\nwas a little strange.
\nNot much
\njust a little
\nlike those aliens
\nin the Twilight Zone
\nwho were just like us
\nbut had one oddity
\nthat gave them away.<\/p>\n
He was like most dads
\nin those days, the late 60s
\nwe, in our time and place
\nworking the land
\nlong beards, home made wine in hand
\nhopes of a better tomorrow
\npeace not war, live for today
\ngoats, gardens, barefoot kids running around
\nlate night campfires and song.<\/p>\n
Yet, I knew my dad
\nwas strange. A little off.<\/p>\n
He’d dance around like
\nPonce de Leon at the beach
\nwearing his speedo
\neverything hanging out,
\nus kids scattering, hoping
\nnobody thought he was
\nOUR dad.<\/p>\n
And he kept EVERYTHING.
\nOld wrappers, 20 year old magazines,
\ntobacco tins which I filled with old nails
\npounded and painfully removed from old boards.
\nHe kept everything.<\/p>\n
But most peculiar of all
\nwas his English.
\nHe spoke it fluently, perfectly
\nyet
\none word gave him away –
\n“develop”.
\n“Devilup”, he’d say.
\n“We have to Devilup the plan.”
\nand me, a 9 year old
\nwould tilt my head
\nand think,
\n“My dad is an alien”.<\/p>\n
Only years later did I discover
\nhe truly was an alien
\nfrom some far off place
\ncalled “Europe”.
\nIt was then that my dream
\nto live a life of difference
\nas a human, all too human
\nbut with some alien in me
